Maximize the Ohio Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) Tax Credit

Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) provide need-based scholarships to students attending private schools. In Ohio, taxpayers who donate to SGOs may qualify for a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit of up to $750 for individuals or $1,500 for married couples filing jointly. This means your contribution could be nearly cost-neutral, reducing your state tax liability by the same amount

Finding an SGO in Ohio

A list of approved SGOs is available on the Ohio Attorney General’s website. Since SGOs must renew their certification annually, it’s important to verify their current status before making a donation.

If you’re interested in supporting a particular school but aren’t sure if it participates in an SGO, check directly with the school or visit its website for details. Keep in mind that SGOs often cover multiple schools, so the school name may not appear directly on the state’s directory.

For example, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati operates an SGO that provides scholarships for K-12 Catholic schools in the area. Donors can choose to designate their contribution to benefit a specific school’s scholarship fund.

Claiming the Ohio Scholarship Donation Credit

To apply the Ohio Scholarship Donation Credit to your 2024 tax return, donations must be made to an eligible SGO by April 15, 2025. It’s important to send your contribution directly to the SGO, not the school itself. After donating, you’ll receive a confirmation letter from the SGO to include with your tax return.

The credit is nonrefundable, meaning it can’t exceed your total Ohio state tax liability. For example:

  • If you donate $750 and your state tax liability is $500, your credit will be capped at $500.
  • If you donate $750 and your liability is $750 or more, you can claim the full $750 credit.

For married couples filing jointly, it’s recommended that each spouse make a $750 donation in their own name to maximize the credit. A single $1,500 donation may limit your ability to claim the full benefit.
