QuickBooks Desktop Subscriptions Discontinued: What It Means for Your Business Moving Forward
Intuit has announced that after July 31, 2024, they will discontinue new subscriptions for several QuickBooks Desktop products in the US, including:
- QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Mac Plus
- QuickBooks Desktop Enhanced Payroll
Additionally, starting January 8, 2024, the fee for direct deposits through QuickBooks Desktop Payroll increased. This move signifies Intuit’s strategic pivot towards QuickBooks Online, a transition that might bring challenges but also opportunities for your business.
Why This Matters to You
Security Risks: Non-subscription licensees will no longer receive security updates, which poses a significant risk. Hackers can quickly exploit vulnerabilities in outdated software.
Limited Choices: The only desktop SKU sold for 2025 and going forward will be QuickBooks Enterprise. Other 2022-2024 versions will continue to be supported, but will phase out annually, starting with the 2022 version in May of 2025.
Performance Concerns: We understand that many business owners have reservations about QuickBooks Online, noting it can be less responsive and might lack some functionalities of the Desktop versions. However, with Intuit steering the market towards online solutions, adapting to this change is becoming inevitable.
The Benefits of QuickBooks Online
Despite some concerns, QuickBooks Online offers several advantages, especially for businesses needing remote access or those with mobile workforces. It provides:
- Remote Accessibility: Easier access to your accounting data from anywhere.
- Enhanced Collaboration: Simplified data sharing with external accountants and remote users.
- Improved Security: Regular updates and robust security features to protect your data.
- Ongoing Support: subscriptions will continue receiving support, including security and product updates.
